Chanukah Applesauce and Tzedakah Box Activity

Students at the Hebrew School recently crushed apples for wonderfully delicious homemade applesauce and also crafted Tzedakah Boxes in preparation for Chanukah. Tzedakah, literally translated, means justice, and refers to the religious obligation to perform charity, and philanthropic acts. The tzedakah boxes are used to collect coins which will be donated to worthwhile causes.Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd Century BCE. Chanukah is observed for eight nights, with the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum, the Menorah or Chanukiah, one light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night.
