President's Message October 2013

The fall season is upon us at the temple. Rabbi Zamoreís sermons referencing food and a GPS system are consistent with our love of food and a congregation always on the move.

The early New Year had us jumping with the start of Sunday School and the town festival.

Settling into the fall season, we paused to honor our beloved Mr. Weiner with the naming of our religious school, The JCNWJ Mike Weiner School for Jewish Learning. Mr. Weinerís longstanding dedication to our kids and our congregation were echoed in the heartfelt speeches delivered by Kelsey Shelofsky, Abby Bauer and Howie Hirsch, and an overwhelming attendance by our congregants. (You can read their words in the October, 2013 Journal newsletter.)

The pause was short, for our next move took us to Helen Mattson leading the Sukkot Service, and then off we went to the congregation eatery at the Sukkah. This eating and community gathering thing is traditional to Judaism for Shemini Atzeret, the next holiday, adds an extra day for inviting the community to continue together in celebration.

Next up is Simchat Torah, a celebration for completing the torah. Upon completing the last parashah of the Torah, we immediately start over with the first parashah of Genesis. The continuation is representative of a never ending cycle. It is customary for all to participate in the celebration by receiving an aliyah.

The business of the first month of a new year sets the tone for building the bond within our community by bringing us together often and affording each and every one of us with the opportunity to participate in the togetherness.

As we proceed to the second month of our cycle, there will be many togetherness opportunities, including Family Mitzvah Day, the Blood Drive, our walk for Voices Against Brain Cancer, Grow-a-Row, Sisterhood, Book Club, Torah Study and other Adult Education, and the soon to be formed Menís Club. Please join us for one, two or all of these events.

Good company, good food and always good fun.

Mo Bauer
